What I learned on vacation

Many of you know that I’ve been in a busy season of traveling, and celebrating. I’ve been in and out of town with conference speaking, having various meetings, engaging in cohorts and attending college visits. Additionally, I’ve been celebrating the recent graduation of my youngest son who has graduated from high-school. What a blessing! I can’t believe how fast the time has flown by. He’ll be headed to college in August. The nest will be empty and the next phase of life will be kicking in.

Traveling and celebrating culminated with family vacation a few weeks ago in West Palm Beach, Florida. During that time, I was able to sit back, relax, enjoy my family and contemplate all that’s been happening over the last six months. Wow! It’s been a ride. Here are a few things that I learned that I think will encourage you.

  1. Seeing life from a distance takes intentionality. In the midst of life, it’s hard to see and appreciate all that’s going on. It takes deliberate and purposeful energy to see it all.

  2. It’s nothing wrong with sleeping nine hours! I collapsed on the bed when I arrived in Florida after a ten hour drive. I’ve never gone to bed at 9:30pm but that night, I did. No regrets, just me and that Marriott pillow.

  3. Relationships matter the most. I’ve accomplished a lot in my life. I’m doing well financially. I have a loving wife and family. We have graduated all of our kids. I’m engaged in the lives of people and seeing transformation. I’m in great health. I’m growing in my relationship with God. But what I’ve learned the most is that people matter more than anything.

  4. Spending hours on the beach is highly therapeutic. Salt water, sand, beach recliners and the sun does wonders to the central nervous system. I can sit for hours on the beach. During that time, my mind is free. I get creative. I plan. I see God’s handiwork. I learn to slow down.

  5. Costco and Amazon will dominate the consumer space for the next ten plus years. The first place we go upon arrival to West Palm Beach is always Costco. They have everything we need in bulk. That’s a win. Additionally, upon arrival, I realized that I ran out of an herb that I take. I quickly got online, ordered it, and within a day, it arrived at the resort. These two businesses are lifesavers. There future is bright.

  6. Make plans today for the life you want later. Life takes planning. Life takes sacrifice. Dream. Wonder. Go after what you want and how God is leading you. I can’t wait for the day that I can be at the beach for 30 days out of the year.

  7. Life is all about memories. Make them. Time will pass. Experiences will happen. People will relocate. Enjoy the present and reflect on the memory.

  8. Riding jet-skis is a must-do for everyone. We rode jet-skis on the intercostal waters of West Palm Beach. This brought back fond memories of when I used to ride motorcycles as a young boy. This is a must do every time I go to the beach from here on.

  9. Dream. Never stop dreaming. Even when things look cloudy or uncertain, dream. Never stop.

  10. Take calculated risk. Don’t be afraid to make hard decisions that don’t make sense. Risks are scary but the reward in oftentimes great. Go for it.

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about what I have learned. If it’s been helpful for you, please share it with your friends and family members. Also, FOLLOW me on Instagram @healthywholealive.
